Holistic Wellness: Embracing the Sattvic Lifestyle through Yoga and Ancient Wisdom

In my quest for holistic wellness, I have traveled the world, and one powerful practice that has proven concrete for my well-being is Yoga. Yoga, an ancient practice with roots in the Vedic tradition, offers profound wisdom that extends beyond physical postures. At the heart of this wisdom lies the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, guiding one towards self-realization and spiritual growth. A key teaching central to the yogic philosophy that I would like to introduce to you here is the concept of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—three fundamental qualities that influence our mind, body, and spirit, and therefore, our holistic selves!

Understanding Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas

According to the Vedic philosophy, everything in existence, including our minds and actions, is influenced by three Gunas or qualities—Sattva (purity), Rajas (activity), and Tamas (inertia). These Gunas shape our experiences and determine our mental state and overall well-being.

1. Sattva: Sattva embodies purity, harmony, and balance. It represents clarity of mind, peace, and spiritual awareness. A person in a Sattvic state feels light, and experiences a calm and focused mind, making it easier to connect with the deeper aspects of life. With this quality, one can find immense joy in the simple things.

2. Rajas: Rajas signifies activity, ambition, and restlessness. It fuels our desires, passions, and attachments. While Rajas can be beneficial in moderation, excessive Rajas lead to stress, anxiety, and an unsteady mind. The idea of excessive productivity, and constantly working is an example of Rajas.

3. Tamas: Tamas embodies inertia, lethargy, and darkness. It manifests as ignorance, laziness, and negative emotions. In a Tamasic state, one may experience heaviness and a lack of motivation. This is often characterized by confusion, stuckness, or depressive states. It also motivates materialistic consumption and the overvaluing of possession of objects.

It is important to note here, that we may experience all these states many different times throughout our lives, and if you feel you are in a tamasic state, you do not need to be hard on yourself, instead you can utilize this knowledge as a tool for how you can help to bring yourself into a lighter and more enjoyable state of being.

Holistic Wellness through Sattvic Living

Understanding and working through these states within oneself can take time, practice, awareness, and repetition, so be gentle with yourself. The general goal here would be to maintain a Sattvic lifestyle when possible.

A Sattvic lifestyle involves embracing practices that cultivate purity, harmony, and balance. Here are some realistic ways to incorporate Sattva into our lives:

1. Have Some Kind of Routine: I know, routine can be a difficult one (at least for me), however, having a routine can help to calm the mind and bring it into focus. Some ways that you can strive for this are by waking and sleeping around the same time everyday, and eating your meals at the same time everyday. This helps your body to get into a rhythm and function at its optimum, so that you can put energy and focus where it is most important.

2. Mindful Yoga Practice, Meditation, and Pranayama: Sattvic life is intrinsically part of Yoga and vice-versa. Practicing asanas mindfully, connecting breath and movement helps to foster inner stillness and self-awareness. Also, engaging in regular meditation and pranayama (breathwork) to quiet the mind and cultivate mental clarity.

3. Some Mindful Practice: Meditation and yoga are good options for focusing the mind and regulating the breath, however these are not everyone’s cup of tea, so find what works for you. Even things like walking, surfing, dancing, or creating art can bring one into a mindful state every day. This allows the mind to rest from its regular patterns of thinking and brings one into enjoying the moment.

4. Wholesome Nutrition: Choose fresh and seasonal foods that promote physical health and mental clarity. Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and good fats into your diet. Try eating simple foods, not too oversaturated with salts, sugars, oils, or spices.

5. Limit Stimulants and Intoxicants: Reduce the consumption of stimulants like caffeine, processed foods, and refined sugars, which can disturb the mind’s tranquility via disruption of the gut biome. Also, try cutting out intoxicants like alcohol.

6. Nature Connection: Spend time in nature, whether it’s a walk in the park, hiking, or gardening. Nature naturally supports Sattvic qualities. If possible, also walk on the Earth (grass or sand) with bare feet as this helps the body bring in positive ions and energy.

7. Cultivate Compassion: Practice acts of kindness and compassion towards yourself and others, fostering a heart-centered approach to life. When you practice mindfulness, it is important to become aware of automatic reactions and work on having compassion for yourself and others in those instances.

8. Limit Media Exposure: Limit exposure to negative or excessive media that can disturb the mind’s serenity.

9. Seek Knowledge and Wisdom: Engage in reading and contemplation of spiritual texts or uplifting literature.

10. Prioritize Restful Sleep: Get sufficient, restful sleep to rejuvenate the mind and body.

11. Cultivate Gratitude: Practice gratitude to shift focus from desires and attachments towards contentment and appreciation.

Incorporating Sattvic practices into your daily lives can help you to navigate the complexities of the modern world while nurturing physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The path to holistic wellness begins within ourselves—a journey towards the light of Sattva, finding balance and serenity amidst life’s ever-changing tides.
